Call for volunteer judges for the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair 2010
Dear San Diego Chapter members,
Once again, the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair is coming up! For the Fifth year, our chapter will be sending judges to assess the statistical content of the projects of the senior high school participants. This will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday 24 March 2010, at the Balboa Park Activity Center on Park Boulevard.
SDASA will award winners their prizes at a later date.
We urge all chapter members to volunteer as a judge. As a volunteer judge not only will you be able to verify directly that there is indeed such a thing as a free lunch, courtesy of SDASA, you will also be able to sample for yourself the impressive diversity and sophistication of the submitted projects, as well as the fun of interacting with students eager to present and discuss their statistical analyses and results.
Judges from previous years consistently report that this is a fun and rewarding activity, one of their favorite statistically relevant events
- not only are judges able to interact with enthusiastic young people, but it is an opportunity to get to know other members of the chapter.
Science fair organizers have expressed their gratitude to us for our past participation. They have made clear to us their view that judging statistics plays an especially vital role in the assessment of science and engineering projects, while the presence of interested statisticians provides a special boost to aspiring scientist and engineers.
We will meet around 12:30 on Wednesday 24 March 2010 to go over criteria for judging and the structure of our rating sheets, and divvy up the projects among ourselves while enjoying lunch. Then we will do a first round of judging, reassemble to discuss first reviews, return to the projects for a confirmatory round of evaluation, reconvene to finalize results, and be done by 4:30.
Anyone with a working knowledge of statistics can be a judge - please join us!
Volunteers please sign up with Caroline Lanigan at clanigan@flash.net by the 15th of March 2010. Please include Science Fair Judging in the message subject line. I will provide a list of judges to the GSDSEF organizing committee on the 15th of March 2010. Additional information will be provided to volunteers.
