The San Diego Chapter ASA held its 5th annual business meeting on Thursday, October 28 at Pfizer. Thirty three members attended the event. Pizza and salads by Pat & Oscar's at Carmel Valley were served from 5:30-6:30pm, prior to the business meeting. At the meeting, Nancy Lo summarized the important activities of SDASA for the year: The first One-day conference on Feb 27th, the Careers day on April 17th, Picnic on Sept 18th, the monthly Book Club since September 26th, 2003 and one seminar given by Professor N. Scott Urquhart, Department of Statistics, Colorado State University, on Uses of Power in Designing long-term environmental surveys’ on March 29th. She encouraged members to present their research results or their on-going projects to the association. She also encouraged all male-members to take active part in the activities of the association.

 


The chapter's newly elected officers were introduced: Sheela Talwalker, President-elect, Oralia Loza, secretary and Bei Zhang, the treasurer. Chris Aki, Chair of the Committee on Nomination and Election, introduced candidates for Spring 2005 elections for Vice President for Professional Affairs: John Su, Isis, and Patricia English, Pfizer and Vice President for Academic Affairs: Shahrokh Golshan, UCSD, with terms beginning July 1, 2005. More candidates are welcome.

 

For their significant contributions in serving the San Diego Chapter, former secretary, Yan Wang, treasurer, Jan Callahan, and the representative to Council of Chapter, Reena Deutsch, were presented with Distinguished Service Awards. Nancy Lo also extended congratulations to Chuck Davis, vice president, Biometrics, Elan Pharmaceuticals, who was named this year as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, with the following citation: For contributions to statistical methodology for clinical trial, categorical data analysis and the analysis of repeated measurements; for excellence in collaborative research and consulting in the medical field; and for outstanding contributions in continuing education.
The floor discussion included paid advertisement, possible newsletter, starting a program to talk to high school AP students and community colleges on statistics, judging statistical related work in San Diego annual science fair, ASA travel courses and sharing speakers of the annual applied statistics workshop with S. California Chapter. Following the business meeting was a presentation by Dr. Glen Andrew, La Jolla Laboratories, Pfizer, on ‘The Values of Statisticians in Pharmaceutical Industry’, which was well received.
